Hello All:

At about 2600 miles on my SS, I discovered that the differential was leaking oil. A very small amount, but leaking none-the-less. Took it to the dealer this afternoon and they said the pinion seal is leaking and they have ordered a new seal and yoke. Because there are no TSB's on this issue, they don't know whether the problem is with the seal or the yoke, so they are replacing both.

This is very unusual. I haven't had a pinion seal leak in a zillion miles of driving many cars.

However, if it happened to me, it could happen to you so keep your eyes open where you park for drips on the floor.

Drive safe. Enjoy your ride.

so its not an axle seal? I kind of always thought on the IRS cars the axle seals would be the first to fail. Good info, I need to keep an eye on it, luckily I'll have her up for an oil change this weekend and will give it a looksee

I have this same issue on a 2001 with only 24k on it. Has anyone replaced this as a DIY project? Doesn't seem like it should be too difficult. Any advise?

Biggest pain in the but is if you pull the pinion you need to need to get the spacing right. Some will say you just reuse the old stuff others will suggest getting a new chush washer. Then you have to torque it down and get a certain resistance # which is how much force it takes to spin the pinion. All my rears end up slightly noisier when I'm done
