View Full Version : 86 z28 iroc camaro
PaulCosoz28 01-09-2010, 10:03 PM Hey guys, im a new camaro owner as well as a forum guy, just got a 86 iroc z28 and it was having a bogging out problem, i put new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, throttle position sensor, fuel filter fuel pump and fuel pump relay in. I cant even get it to start now. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
BeeMe 01-11-2010, 09:49 AM Does it even try to turn over? My first guess would be the distro cap being off or maybe some plug wires crossed up.
PaulCosoz28 01-11-2010, 10:12 PM Yea it cranks but it wont do anything else, ive checked the cap and the pluggs, someone told me it might be a mass airflow sensor?

I would think if the MAF when bad that your Service engine light woudl be on. Not sure that would keep it from starting. Might make it run for shit and quit.
Pull the cap and crank it for a second. Make sure the rotor is turning. Just incase the timing chain checked out on you. If that is kosher, pull the #1 plug and have someone crank it. There are a couple ways you can do this. If you put the plug back in the wire, watch the eletrode for spark. You could also watch inside the plug wire but you may been to put a tip of a screwdriver in there to have it arch off if. NOTE if you do either of the these watch where your hands are. Don't get shocked.
There is also an In line ignition spark tester that you can get from autozone for like 7 bucks.
Also check that you are getting fuel into the carb/TB. If you pump it by hand do you see fuel squirt in?
PaulCosoz28 01-13-2010, 03:13 AM Well my camaro is Tune port injected, How would i check for that/check the fuel pressure? I'm not to familiar with fuel systems or how to check the pressure?
BeeMe 01-13-2010, 06:53 AM I'm guessing there will be at least 1 hard fuel line under hood. It most likely has a port on it that looks similar to a tire valve. From a partstore you could buy or rent a pressure guage.
Don't push the valve becasue if there is pressure it will blow everywhere. At least that is what happened the one time I had a 'whats this do' moment.
PaulCosoz28 01-13-2010, 09:07 PM HaHA, i've had plenty of those on this car. Its my first car im trying to fix up so its pretty much a learning experience on most things. Thanks For all your help.
BeeMe 01-13-2010, 09:57 PM No problem. Hopefully something I say helps you get it up and running.
PaulCosoz28 01-14-2010, 01:33 AM Do you happen to know what the pressure is supposed to be for the fuel?
BeeMe 01-14-2010, 06:34 AM No I don't. I'll try to poke around today and find somethig for you. I'm not thinking it would be too high. Current EFI systems are in the 40-60 range I believe. I'd have to think TPI would be there or a little lower.
BeeMe 01-14-2010, 08:09 AM Found this online. Hope it helps.
Fuel Pressure Testing
Test the fuel pressure. You can either buy the $175 TPI fuel pressure test kit with the right fittings, etc. or else get a 0-50 PSI pressure gauge from the local speed shop for $30 and use a short piece of rubber hose and a couple of hose clamps. Perhaps this is not as safe as using the proper test gear so make sure you know where your fire extinguish is and have an assistant sit behind the wheel in case you need to have the fuel pump turned off quickly.
The manual says you should see 40.5 to 47 PSI when you turn the car on (without starting it). You should hear the fuel pump come on for a few seconds and then shut off. When you start the car, it's supposed to drop 3-10 lbs. Mine started at 40 and dropped to 37. I also hooked the MityVac to the fuel pressure regular and convinced myself that it was working. (No vacuum boosted the pressure to about 45 and other vacuum values produced numbers between there and 37 lbs.)
When you first turn the key to on do you hear your fuel pump run? Also do you hear any clicking under the hood? I think the injectors do a test then too and they might click as they cycle on and off.
PaulCosoz28 01-14-2010, 03:17 PM Ok thanks buddy.
PaulCosoz28 01-14-2010, 03:20 PM Thanks this was a real big help, hopefully all your help will help me get this up and running.
BeeMe 01-14-2010, 05:09 PM No problem. A downed car sucks. I know from experience.
PaulCosoz28 01-15-2010, 10:54 PM Yea, i actually bought it back in the beging of august and havent got to drive since well 2 weeks into august so it is a bumer. Im hopeing to get it going here soon so i can have ready for spring.
BeeMe 01-16-2010, 06:27 PM Yeah we got to get your car on the road man. I'll help as much as I can.
PaulCosoz28 01-16-2010, 10:27 PM Thanks bud i appreciate. Good news by the way, i got it fired up today and its running, it sounds like its misses though so i think im going to redo the wires and make sure the firing order is right.
BeeMe 01-17-2010, 08:43 AM Hey congrats on getting her started. What'd you have to do?
PaulCosoz28 01-18-2010, 03:16 PM We flushed the old gas out and put new in, my throttle cable was really loose so we tightened that up and i checked the spark on the wires. We got it started it up and i took it for a ride, its running but its just lagging power, i can here a little backfire and when i put the peddle to the floor it doesnt want to do anything, the rpms stay where there at and the car slowly starts to go a little faster?
BeeMe 01-18-2010, 03:27 PM Is there another cable running to the throttle linkage from the trans? That might be loose too. That would affect how the trans reacts and shifts. How did it shift when you had it out? With it in P if you hit the gas will it rev or is it just under load that it acts poorly.
PaulCosoz28 01-18-2010, 10:39 PM When its in park it revs fine, just when im out driving it doesnt want to give any power, ill put it to the floor and it wont rev up, it will just slowly pic up some speed and the rpm gauge will go to like 2grand thats it.
BeeMe 01-19-2010, 07:46 AM Check the TV cable. That is the one that goes to the trans. Sounds like it is in the wrong gear and lugging the car down.
PaulCosoz28 01-19-2010, 09:38 PM How would i check that. And if its that what would i do to fix it?
BeeMe 01-19-2010, 09:47 PM I tried typing it up. But this is easier

PaulCosoz28 01-26-2010, 02:58 PM Hey buddy sorry my computers been down and acting crazy, but, that article you sent me did wonders. The car is running good. Thanks again.
BeeMe 01-26-2010, 05:14 PM Man that is great. I'm glad I could help. Hope the weather gets better and you can enjoy driving her. You busted your ass to get it running.
CONGRATS
PaulCosoz28 02-07-2010, 03:10 PM Thanks buddy
Do you happen to know how the cooling setup is for my 86, i've looked everywhere and cant figure it out. I currently have a electric fan on the radiator and its not working. To my knowledge tho i thought the fan was on the pully. The car did have air conditioning but i took it off. Whats the best option.
BeeMe 02-07-2010, 03:40 PM I think the electric fan is right. There is a fuseable link in there somewhere. You coudl test by connecting the fan directly to the battery to make sure it even comes on. If it does then you should check the temp guage that it gets its 'turn on/tun off' signal from. That is probably in the side of the block.
The local library would have Chilton manuals and I'm sure your year camaro would be in one. It would lay everything out for you. They are really good manuals.
