Hi,

Thanks for reading. I have a '91 V8 Camaro and two of my problems are:

High RPMs: Is it normal to have the RPMs at approx. 3800 rpms at 70 mph. That seems a little high to me. I have checked to see if it was going into overdrive and I think that it is, because when I down shift on the automatic shifter, the trans downshifts also. Is this normal? Is there anything I can do?

Surging RPMs: Sitting still you cant really feel it, but at any speed you can feel a surging of the rpms. The surging is maybe in periods (from high to low to high) of 3 seconds maybe. Is there a sensor problem? The car also overheats often, someone said it might be overheating because a sensor is dumping gas into the engine; if this is true, it seems this might be the source of the surging.

Thank you in advance for any help,
Sean

3800 RPM is way to high, maybe you are getting in high gear but if you have O/D it isn't going in! @ 70 MPH 2500 RPM at the most. 3800 is still to high even without O/D.

The Surging, if you have fuel injection have your fuel delivery system cleaned, injectors, manifold, injector rails, they do it at dealers and other shops. Try to make sure that it COULD be the problem first because it is not a cheap service, over $100.00 in most cases.

If it is a Carb, the jets, float, it may need to be rebuilt?

Do you notice anything else where it could be internal?

Sorry, I did not read your entire post.

You do have O/D but you need to feel 4 shift points as it goes through the gears, the 4th is O/D.

I also read that the motor is over heating, I had this one and it turned out to be a blown head gasket. Is there any anti-freeze in the oil, are you blowing more white or blue smoke than usual out the exhaust when you start in the morning?

1. Sounds like the car doesnt think you are getting enough fuel, therefore it sends more gas into the engine causing it to get hot.

2. That is quite high RPM's for overdrive. Mine is around 3000 RPM and I have a 700R transmission with overdrive. Hopefully you don't need a new tranny.
