Ok so heres what I got. I just bought a 78 Camaro Z28. When I purchased the car I was told that the engine was recently rebuilt and came from a 69 Corvette.... ok, great. Well, I did my first oil change immediately and found that the dipstick tube was broken. Had an extremely hard time finding a dipstick to match the engine. Also the dipstick is on the passenger side, from what I understand GM didn't make a passenger side dipstick until 81 and if that is case how can the motor be from a 69 vette. Anyway, while repairing the dipstick we removed the wires on that side for clearance and forgot where they went for replacement so looked up the firing order and rewired the engine.

Now the car will not start no matter what I do. I replaced the plugs, wires, car and rotor. Still no start. The car cranks and feels like it wants to start but nothing. I am getting spark and fuel to the engine.

I dont know what what to do at this point. Is there an alternate firing order for the engine that I dont know about somewhere, perhaps for a newer year small block 350? I have tried the standard configuration, the configuration for a 69 small block and also for a pontiac just for kicks and no luck!!

Any ideas are greatly appreciated!!!

Look for the VIN on the engine block. This will help you to identify at least what model and year of the engine. As soon as you learn this info you should not have a difficult time in locating the firing order for that engine.

Take number one plug out, put your finger over the hole and have someone bump it around until it blow's your finger off the hole. This should be top dead center take distributor cap off and see where your rotary button is pointing, that's where you need to start firing order is 18436572 clockwise.

Here is some good info for when you pull the casting #s.

'80-'85. '86 was one-piece rear main seal. Dipstick remained on the passenger side.

'55-'79 SBC, the dipstick was on the driver's side.

Did you take the distributor out? If not thats a good thing, now you just need to verify the cap is right and wires go to the correct plug. Is this a HEI cap and coil system or something else? Is there an MSD box somewhere?
